What Does this bHCG Test Result Mean?

Hi. My name is Sheila and I had a miscarriage about 2 months ago and I haven t stopped bleeding. About 2 days ago I went to my doctor who did a Quantitative BCHG test and the results read 9.71 MIU/ml. Kindly help me understand the results better and if possible advice on what to do to stop the bleeding because I want to conceive again.

Dear Sheila,

In non-pregnant state, the Beta hCG levels in blood are less than 5 mIU/ml. The levels of this hormone above 25 mIU/ml confirm the pregnancy. After abortion; i.e. after the baby has become non-viable, it requires few days, usually more than a week for Beta hCG hormone to reach the levels of non-pregnant state.

Now let us correlate your levels with the events.

You had miscarriage. It means, there is no viable baby now in your uterus. Hence the raised levels of Beta hCG have started falling down. Now they are 9.71, meaning there by that you have aborted, however the levels of Beta hCG have not reached the non-pregnant levels as yet. It will take few days to week(s) for the levels of Beta hCG to go under 5 mIU/ml.

Sheila, I do not think that there is any issue of concern with your Beta hCG levels.

I hope this convinces you.
